Starfleet regularly sends starships on long term missions to explore the galaxy. In the 23rd century, five-year missions were not uncommon for well-equipped ships like the Constitution class.

Perhaps the most famous of all five-year missions were those of the first USS Enterprise.

Missions of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)

  1. 2245-2250: First five-year mission under the command of Captain Robert April.
  2. 2251-2256: Second five-year mission under the command of Captain Christopher Pike (see "The Cage").
  3. 2257-2262: Third five-year mission under the command of Captain Christopher Pike.
  4. 2265-2270: Fourth five-year mission under the command of Captain James T. Kirk (see Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Animated Series).
  5. 2273-2278: Fifth and final five-year mission under the command of Captain James T. Kirk (conjecture)

Background Information

Captain Robert April and the dates of the pre-TOS missions are partly conjecture of Michael Okuda, based on very early draft scripts and notes made by Gene Roddenberry. Captain April made an appearance at age 75 in the animated series episode The Counter-Clock Incident.

These dates leave a gap between the end of Pike's last mission and Kirk's mission. There is no canon information on what happened in these years.

There are also theories about a fifth mission (sixth including the mission of Captain Robert April), set after Star Trek: The Motion Picture, but no firm evidence exists.

The three-year run of Star Trek: The Original Series and the two-year run of Star Trek: The Animated Series constitute Kirk's five-year mission.

In an interview in the DS9 Season 3 DVD, Ira Steven Behr says that, in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the USS Defiant was "on a five-year mission to kick ass".de:Fünf-Jahres-Mission
