Gene L. Coon (January 7, 1924July 8, 1973; sometimes also credited as Lee Cronin) was a writer and producer for Star Trek: The Original Series. He produced the first season of TOS from "Miri" to "Operation: Annihilate!" and the second season from "Catspaw" to "Bread and Circuses".

Coon, a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, also wrote two novels, "Meanwhile, Back At The Front" and "The Short End", dealing with that conflict.

He died of lung cancer only a week after being diagnosed. Robert Justman urged Coon to go in for tests after he visted one day wearing an oxygen mask, gasping and coughing. Coon initially believed (or wanted to believe) that his breathing difficulties stemmed from the "Goddamned L.A. smog."
