Summary

After an incident involving Crewman Dalby, Captain Janeway asks Tuvok to teach the young cadets to work under the Starfleet protocol. With the goal of teaching the group the values of cooperation, Starfleet protocols and to give an overall positive experience Tuvok engages the group in activities. It doesn't take long for the group to get out of hand and leave Tuvok standing in the cargo bay alone.

After hearing the report on the "Maquis" class, Chakotay, having their trust as a friend and their former captain, talks to them in one way or another. Dalby, feeling they should be allowed to do things the Maquis way, expresses his opinion to Chakotay in the mess hall. Chakotay, proving his point, hits Dalby and knocks him off the chair, saying "That's the Maquis way too isn't it? And if you want to keep doing it that's fine with me. We can do that tomorrow, the next day, everyday until you report to Lieutenant Tuvok."

The issue ends there - they take the class. Meanwhile, an infectious disease attacks the bio-neural circutry. After talking to Neelix about the inability to bond and get along with the cadet class, Tuvok discovers the source of the infection causing the continuous loss of bio-neural gel packs: cheese. After the Doctor discovers the treatment, fever, Captain Janeway heats up the ship by way of running the warp core at 80% without going to warp.

As the pulse surge required to clean the bio-neural gel packs occurs, some of the conduits blow out, trapping Tuvok and his class in one of the cargo bays. The toxic gas incapacitates Tuvok as he sends out the rest of the cadets and goes after an unconscious cadet on the upper floor. The cadets eventually pull Tuvok and their friend out of the cargo bay and come to a new compromise of following the class and the rules. Getting rid of the virus that attacked Voyager's bio-neural circutry restores its systems and the voyage home continues.

Captain's log, stardate 48846.5. Ordinarily, the loss of a gel pack would be a minor inconvenience, but here in the Delta Quadrant, it’s a reminder of the precarious nature of our journey.

Security log, supplemental. I have recreated the bridge of Voyager on the holodeck and scheduled a war game simulation. I am hopeful that an exercise in teamwork will help to instill a sense of participation among my trainees.

Captain’s log, stardate 48859.3. Lieutenant Tuvok has reported what may be a possible explanation for the infection in the bio-neural gel packs. I have asked Lieutenant Torres and her team to investigate Neelix’s kitchen.
