Biography
In 1967, he graduated the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in speech. He worked as director of dramatic development for Warner Bros. Television before joining Paramount in 1984 as director of current programming, overseeing several series such as Cheers, Family Ties, Webster, and MacGyver.
He was selected by Paramount to help Gene Roddenberry create Star Trek: The Next Generation, and was one of several producers for the series. He took over as the executive producer of the Star Trek franchise after Roddenberry died in 1991.
He was the co-creator and executive producer of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise.
Criticism
A proportion of fans believe that under Berman's influence, in an attempt to lure more viewers, the Star Trek series have stepped away from the 'traditional' moral storylines and philosophical questioning to become more action-oriented and sexually explicit. They argue that some of his stories break the continuity established in TOS and TNG. In particular, they find that elements of the prequel series, Star Trek: Enterprise, contradict established facts in the Star Trek series, while at the same time not focusing enough on the "prequel" premise of the series. Some fans explicitly blame Berman for the steadily declining ratings - and cancellation - that they believe Enterprise has received as a result of this.
